Today, working with the Grafton Taylor Health Department, Taylor County Schools has confirmed 1 staff member at GHS is positive. In addition, 2 staff members are quarantined due to being a contact to a positive.  This brings the total to 5 positive cases among staff at Grafton High School rising to the level of an outbreak. Grafton High School will be closed Tuesday for further cleaning in the impacted areas by custodial staff. All other staff will work from home to continue to support students.  All impacted individuals have been contacted and no further actions are necessary.  In accordance with privacy laws, information specific to these cases will not be released publicly, however, details are being made available to keep the community informed of the transmission of COVID-19 within our schools. We urge you to continue to follow best health practices including wearing face coverings, practicing social distancing, hand washing and cleaning protocols regularly.

Christy Miller, Superintendent

Good evening Families and Students,

We want to thank you for your patience as we met this evening to determine the delivery of instruction for students in Taylor County Schools. The Taylor County Board of Education has determined that our students will remain remote for the next two weeks. We will make our decision on what lies ahead for the following two weeks on Friday, January 29, 2021.

Please visit the county website and Facebook page as well as the  websites of your students’ school for the most up to date information as we continue to move forward with the instructional program in Taylor County.

The plan approved on December 22, 2020 includes the following Taylor County numbers to be used to determine the color we follow for instructional delivery.

Green

Yellow

Gold

Orange

Red

Cumulative number of positives in a 7- day period

3 or less

4 – 11

12 – 17

18 – 29

30 or more

We will move down one-color level if the positivity rate on Friday is below 5%.

Over the last week Taylor County has had a total of 52 new cases. This puts us in the red category. When we apply Friday, January 15, 2021 positivity rate of 3.96 as reported by the WVDHHR we are orange.

Thank you for your continued support of our staff and students.

Dear Families and Students,

As we move closer to possibly bringing students back to our buildings, we wanted to provide additional information on how our plan will work and the mitigation strategies we will have in place in our buildings. Additionally, the vaccination process for county school employees is underway with approximately 72 employees receiving their first vaccine on January 7th. This is just the beginning and we hope the state will be providing more each week. Meal ordering and distribution reminders as well as virtual school reminders are included below.

Mitigation Strategies

  1. Consistent and correct use of masks
  2. Hand hygiene/coughing and sneezing etiquette
  3. Social distance to the largest extent
  4. Eliminate large group gatherings outside of classroom/core group
  5. Cleaning and disinfection
  6. Contact tracing in collaboration with local health department

Plan

The plan adopted by the Taylor County Board of Education at their December 22nd meeting included the use of the WVDE School Map. This map is no longer available so we will be using the WVDHHR map and table that shows the daily 7-day average of the infection rate and percent positive to make our decisions of which Tier we will be following. This decision will be made on Fridays, with our first decision Friday January 15, 2021. Below is the Taylor County specific numbers and colors guiding our decisions and a reminder that if the positivity rate is below 5% we will lower our color by one level. The tiers correspond to the color we will be using to guide if we are remote or in person for instruction.

We will be using the following numbers and colors for instruction whether remote or in person before applying the positivity rate lowering by one level if it is below 5%.

Green

Yellow

Gold

Orange

Red

Cumulative number of positives in a 7 day period

3 or less

4 – 11

12 – 17

18 – 29

30 or more

Example: If we are orange on the WVDHHR map and our positivity rate is 3.25%, we would be gold.

According to our tiered plan, this means we would be in Tier 4 allowing us to do two days of in person learning with half of our students attending on Monday/Tuesday and the other half on Thursday/Friday with the other days at home like we were doing prior to the holiday break.

Meals

We will continue to offer meals for our virtual students and to all students when we are in remote learning. Orders can be called in to any school of your choosing. The call must be made by 10:00 a.m. on Monday of each week with pickup at the same school you placed the order at 1:00 p.m. that day. The pack will be 5 days of meals for each order placed.

Virtual School

Virtual School will continue to be an option for students during the second semester.  Students will have two weeks at the beginning to engage and complete work satisfactorily. Should that not occur, that student will be returned to in-person instruction. There are two programs available based on grade spans.

For kindergarten through 5th grade, Taylor County Schools K-5 Virtual School is staffed by local teachers.  Students receive daily instruction and are given assignments to complete as well.

For grades 6-12, West Virginia Virtual School is the platform used for students who do not attend in-person.  Although it is self-paced, a student must be highly motivated and consistently complete assignments to finish successfully.

Communication

Continual communication is going to be the key for families and students as we enter the recovery phase of the pandemic. We will be using the following ways to communicate our instructional plans using our Tiers.

  • School Messenger
  • County Website
  • School Websites
  • Taylor County Schools Facebook page

Today, working with the Grafton Taylor Health Department, Taylor County Schools has confirmed 1 staff member, who is not a resident of Taylor County, at Grafton High School and 1 staff member at Anna Jarvis is positive.
